The way the brain receives, organizes, and responds to information from the senses, including sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, movement and body position. It helps children understand and interact with their environment. When sensory processing works well, children can focus, stay calm and respond appropriately to the world around them. If there are challenges with sensory processing, children may have difficulty with everyday tasks, becoming overwhelmed or under-responsive to sensory input, which can affect their learning, behaviour and overall development.
